The Library of Independent Exchange L.I.E. has designed a unit for Arnolfini's Reading Room to facilitate the reading of selected books from their collection. Typically the concept of a reading room or library holds at its core the idea that the act of perusing a book is a solitary activity. Through using the lectern however, an ordinary solitary act becomes a shared experience. The lectern is two-sided to enable two people to view the same book at the same time, thus prompting exchange.
L.I.E. has selected GAGARIN and five books from its permanent collection, a different book for each day that the Reading Room is open, Tues-Sun. Each book is made available on the lectenr once a week, encouraging visitors to return to the Reading Room at different days. Also in the Reading Room are a selection of articles from the L.I.E.'s permanent collection including journals, artist books and monographs.

Facing Pages is the greatest event for independant magazines in Europe. 25 Of them were asked to make a top 5 and those top 5 were asked to make a top 3 of the best independant magazines. GAGARIN was chosen in those top 3 and will be included in the exhibition as such. The independant magazines are thriving as never before. More and more writers and artist are now producing magazines themselves. They can reach their readers in no time via the internet. It makes them less independant from traditional gatekeepers such as the curator, the editor, the advertiser or the publisher who confined the acces to a larger public before. These independant magazines have a closer relation with their readers than the more traditional media. They postion themselves in the center of, and not above, our visual culture. They innovate a way of "crowdsourcing" and are an important influence, affecting contemporary visual culture.

This survey of experimental art and design magazines published since 2000 explores the various ways in which contemporary artsists and designers utilize the magazine format as an experimental space for the presentation of artworks and text. Throughout the 20th century, international avant-garde activities in the visual arts and design were often codified first in the informal context of a magazine or journal. This exhibition, drawn from the holdings of the MoMA library, follows the practice into the 21st century. Assembled together, these contemporary magazines provide a first-hand view into these practices and represent the MoMA library's sustained effort to document and collect this medium.
